Federally mandated testing for safety-sensitive employees in FMCSA, FAA, FTA, FRA, PHMSA, and USCG regulated positions. Our collections are fully compliant with 49 CFR Part 40.
DOT drug testing is federally required for employees in safety-sensitive transportation positions. All collections follow strict 49 CFR Part 40 procedures including witnessed collection, tamper-evident sealing, and chain of custody documentation. Results are reviewed by our Medical Review Officer (MRO) before being reported to your Designated Employer Representative (DER).
Driver's license, state ID, or passport. Required for all DOT collections β no exceptions.
Your employer's custody and control form (CCF) or authorization letter designating this test.
If you take any prescription medications, have the list ready in case the MRO needs to contact you.
Drink normal amounts of water. Do NOT over-hydrate β this can cause a dilute specimen requiring a retest.
Arrive at our facility, present your photo ID and employer authorization. Our collector will verify your identity and begin the chain of custody.
You will provide a urine specimen in a private collection restroom. The collector will check temperature and seal the specimen with tamper-evident tape in your presence.
Your sealed specimen is shipped to our SAMHSA-certified laboratory for analysis. Non-negative results receive GC/MS confirmation testing.
All non-negative results are reviewed by our Medical Review Officer, who may contact you about prescription medications before finalizing the result.
Your DER receives the verified result within 24β48 hours via our secure employer portal. You receive a copy through your results portal.
Your DER will be notified and you must be immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties. You'll be referred to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) and must complete the return-to-duty process before resuming safety-sensitive work.
The MRO will contact you before any positive result is reported. Have your prescription documentation ready. If the result is consistent with a legitimate prescription, the MRO will report it as negative.
Plan for 20β30 minutes total including check-in, paperwork, and collection. If you are unable to provide a specimen (shy bladder), you may be given up to 3 hours and required to drink up to 40 oz of water.
Standard DOT urine collections are unobserved. Direct observation is only required under specific circumstances such as a return-to-duty test or when the collector has reason to believe tampering may occur.
